Eco-Schools is an international awards programme that provides a simple framework to enable schools to analyse their operations and become more sustainable. By following the programme, schools will become more stimulating places in which to learn and at the same time will reduce their impact on the environment.

Eco-Schools comprises nine environmental themes including energy and water and there are three award levels:

  • Bronze award - self-assessed via website leading to a certificate
  • Silver award - self-assessed via website leading to a certificate
  • Green Flag - externally assessed leading to a certificate and flag

The design and structure of Sustainable Learning has been deliberately tailored to complement the Eco-Schools programme, enabling schools to benefit from two programmes with little duplication of effort. This is particularly true at Level 1 in Sustainable Learning and with the Eco-Schools Bronze award, where self-assessment is common to both.

Many schools are already Eco-Schools through waste, recycling and school grounds activities and may wish to extend their programme to cover energy and/or water. If you are already an Eco-School and seeking to include energy and water in your activities we strongly encourage you to use Sustainable Learning as the structure and support for your programme.

If you are not registered for Eco-Schools and would like to benefit from the programme and the possibility of additional accreditation for your energy and water activities please click here to access the Eco-Schools web site and registration facility.
